Wungnganing Khongreiwo Crowned as ‘Wungphun’ (Hereditary Head) of Marem Khongreiwo

Ukhrul, Jan 11: Wunganing Khongreiwo, the eldest in line of Marem Khongreiwoshi clan formally took over as Wungphun (Hereditary Head) of Marem Khongreiwoshi clan succeeding his father Hopeson Khongreiwo.

The handing over ceremony took place at Marem village on January 10, 2025 in the presence of Ninghor Khullak Khudai (Chief/Headman of Khongdei/Khongrei), Wungpam Khudai (Chief of Khangkhui Phungdhar), elders of the clan in Marem and from Khongdei/Khongrei village and Sharva̱ (pastors) of Marem Baptist Church.

As per the statement, the Marem Khongreiwoshi clan is a direct offshoot/descendant of the earliest settlers/founders of present Khongdei (Khongrei in Tangkhul) village in Senapati (Tahamzam) district, Manipur. Some clans in villages like Khangkhui Phungdhar and its neighboring villages, including some Tangkhul villages in the East and South Tangkhul regions, trace their origins to the Khongreiwoshi clan in Marem.

While welcoming and congratulating the new leadership, the clan members look forward to strengthening and reconnecting the age-old traditional ties with Khongdei (Khongrei in Tangkhul) the predecessor/progenitor village, and its offshoots beyond Marem, a statement issued by Marem Khongreiwoshi clan from the village added.
