Yet another gold smuggler nabbed with gold worth over Rs 70 lakh at Imphal airport

Imphal: Another case of gold smuggling has been uncovered in Manipur, with the Customs Division, Imphal apprehending a man carrying gold paste weighing 972.28 grams, valued at Rs 70,31,601. Acting on a tip-off, officers from the Anti-Smuggling Unit and Air Intelligence Unit, Customs Division, Imphal along with CISF personnel at Imphal International Airport, detained the individual along with a packet containing gold paste on April 28 around 2 PM.

The accused was then taken to the Customs Division office in Imphal for further legal procedures. Upon thorough inspection, officers recovered two additional oval-shaped packets of suspected foreign-origin gold paste, each concealed in rubber sheaths within the accused’s rectum.

A case has been registered for further investigation to arrest any other individuals involved in the smuggling operation. This incident follows a recent arrest by the Customs Division in Imphal, where a man was caught with gold valued at approximately Rs 45.35 lakh in the Singjamei area of Imphal last Friday.
