UKHRUL: The Zomi Re-unification Organisation (ZRO) on Tuesday issued a strong rejoinder stressing the importance to continue using the term Kuki-Zomi-Hmar in reference to the Suspensions of Operation (SoO) groups.
The reply came as a result of the ‘Advisory to all Media Houses’ issued by Vishwajeet Singh, an Advocate in the Supreme Court and an advisor to the Kuki Civil Society. Singh advised all media organizations, editors, publishers and correspondents that the current Suspension of Operation (SoO) groups be referred to only as Kuki-Zo Political Groups (KZPGs) in print, electronic and digital media.
This was not received well by the ZRO who claimed the advisory note is “Tantamount to imposition of Kuki nomenclature and run the risk of aborting the peace process.” The ZRO recalls that the SoO was signed by the ZRO as a distinct identity with the Government of India in 2005. ZRO also reaffirms its participation in the formation of the United People’s Front (UPF) alongside like-minded groups sharing a common political agenda.

The ZRO further highlighted that the term Kuki-Zomi-Hmar was unanimously agreed upon to refer to SoO groups during a meeting held in Delhi in 2023. Warning against what it described as a ‘malevolent’ media campaign by vested interests to erase Zomi from the political dialogue, ZRO advised all media houses to not fall for such narratives.
