12 accused women sent to police custody for mercilessly assaulting another woman in Imphal

Imphal: Imphal West Court remanded twelve women who have been arrested in connection with the assault of a young woman to three days of police custody on Wednesday afternoon. The 12 women, reportedly members of Huiyen Mamom, an association of women, have been accused of mercilessly assaulting the young lady for allegedly misbehaving after consuming alcohol on New Year eve.

Notably, videos of brutally thrashing the young lady recently went viral on social media platforms which drew widespread criticism for the brutal act. Manipur Police on Tuesday arrested the accused women, reportedly members of Huiyen Mamom during the course of an investigation following registration of a suo-motu case under FIR No. 06(01)2024 IPS Under Sections 326/354/506/34 IPC & 66E IT Act, 2000 at Imphal Police Station in connection with the viral videos.

The accused women were produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West at Cheirap Court Complex, Uripok in Imphal. Irate members and volunteers of Huiyen Mamom stormed the Court complex as the accused persons were being produced in the Court, condemning their arrests. The members even held a heated argument with media people who had come to report the case.

It may be mentioned that Section 326 of IPC attracts imprisonment for life or 10 years plus fine for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means. Section 354 is for offence related to assault or criminal force against a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty, Section 506 is for criminal intimidation, Section 34 for criminal act committed by several persons in furtherance of common intention of all and 66E of IT Act, 2000 for violating privacy intentionally or knowingly capturing, publicizing or transmitting the image of a person.
