40 gold biscuits worth over Rs 3 crore seized in Chandel

Chandel: Sleuths of anti-smuggling unit of the Imphal Customs division have arrested an alleged smuggler and recovered 40 gold biscuits worth around Rs 4 crore.

An official source in the Customs division on Wednesday identified the arrested gold smuggler as Md Umar Faruque (32) of Imphal East district.

The sleuths recovered the smuggled 40 gold biscuits weighing together 6.640 kg from a Bolero the smuggler came with from Thamnapokpi area of Chandel district on the evening of February 6.

The seized gold would be worth over Rs 3,91,40,106, the official source also said.

It then said that the sleuths launched the operation based on specific information regarding the movement of a consignment of smuggled gold.

The sleuths detained the vehicle along with the man on suspicion and brought it to Imphal and conducted a check in the vehicle inside the premises of the Imphal Customs division.

Following the detection of the smuggled gold, the alleged smuggler was formally arrested after booking him under section 102 of Customs Act 1962, the official source added.
