Senapati: With an aim for “Green Highway and Road Safety Mission,” the Mao Students Union (MSU) and the Mao Youth Organization (MYO) had organised mass tree plantation from Makhan Khuman to Mao Gate.
Addressing media persons at tree plantation site, N. Kayisii, MLA, 49-Tadubi AC stated that the tree plantation was taken up together with the Mao Students Union and the Mao Youth Organization which he called an important job for all. The World Environment Day is observed every year on June 5 realising the importance of preserving world ecology. The two MLAs from Mao community were reported to have been monitoring the plantation drive.
48-Mao AC MLA and former PHED minister L. Dikho stated that the day organised with mass Cherry plantation along the NH-2/AH-1. As people’s representatives, the 2 MLAs were stated to have great concern for plantation, protecting and promoting the environment adding they have been trying their best. The MLA also expressed gratitude for active participation from the MSU and the MYO stating to have understood the initiatives taken by the people’s representatives. The information about this day was also reported to have briefed the state chief minister on plantation drive for a stretch of about 30 kms from Makhan Khuman to Mao Gate especially for road side protection with cherry saplings. Cherry has been very popular and has been recognised by the state Govt considering Mao area as cherry growing zone. While giving road protection with many accident prone zones in the region, the state Govt is also reported to have been doing their best and at the same time, the drive was reported to be local initiative. Such plantation is reported to beautify the area as well as to give protection bearer for road safety. With all these in mind, the step was reportedly taken up to save the whole world. The MLAs are also glad that people have come to realise the need to plant more trees and save the environment.

Marikho O’Leriina, President, Mao Students Union (MSU) stated that the MSU and the MYO in partnership with the local MLAs in the presence of A. Kapani, Caretaker Chairman, ADC, Senapati, District Administration, Mao frontal organizations including the Mao Council, Mao Naga Women Welfare Association have taken up the plantation drive. Calling as historic occasion, the MSU President asserted that about 900 volunteers from 35 Mao villages took part in the drive along the NH. The main objective of the plantation was stated to protect the environment and maintain a clean and green highway. The day was also termed as highway cleanliness and Green Mission along NH. Such plantation along the highway was stated to reduce air pollution and to ensure more beautiful as well as to act as safety measures for the highway so as to prevent accidents. As the trees grow up, the student leader called the plantation to act as crash barriers in future with positive responds from people of the region. The student leader also hopes that such initiative would take the Mao community to another level and hopes to set an example to the rest of the society for the whole state as well as the whole country.
The plantation commenced from 8 am on Saturday and continued till 4 pm in the evening. The Senapati District Drivers’ Welfare Union were lauded by everyone for their selfless service to donate packaged drinking water to all the volunteers during the plantation and had supplied from place to place through their ambulance.
