In another feat for Manipur’s Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the 27-year-old Indian weightlifter in her show of remarkable grit and tenacity, successfully lifted 88 kg in her second attempt of snatch to create a new Common Wealth Games 2022 record in Women’s 49 Kg weight category, wining India’s first gold at CWG 2022 at Birmingham, United Kingdom.
Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg (88 kg+ 113 kg), a 29 kg difference between gold medal and silver medal.
In comparison, the Manipur sensational weightlifter Mirabai Chanu in Tokyo 2021 Olympics lifted a total of 202 kg (87 kg+115 kg) clinching India’s first silver medal at the Olympics.
Mirabai Chanu who also created World Record in 119 kg Clean and Jerk in April 2021 at Asian Weightlifting Championships, however, failed to lift a weight of 90 kg in her third attempt of snatch in Women’s 49 kg weight category.
According to ANI, the Tokyo silver medallist said, “Birmingham, UK Commonwealth are the first games I am playing after Tokyo Olympics. I won a gold for the country, I am elated. I’d never done 88 kg and I did it this time, even touched upon 90 kg. I am happy about it.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to twitter and said, “The exceptional Mirabai Chanu makes India proud once again! Every Indian is delighted that she’s won a Gold and set a new Commonwealth record at the Birmingham Games. Her success inspires several Indians, especially budding athletes.”
