AIMS Urges Manipur Governor to Act on Recurring Flood Crisis in Imphal Areas

Published on

Imphal, July 3: Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), a Manipur-based civil society organisation, has submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Manipur, raising alarm over the recurring floods that continue to affect several localities year after year. The group has blamed the worsening situation on the lack of maintenance of the Turel Lourambal (river ban), an essential infrastructure meant to regulate water flow and prevent flooding.

In its appeal, AIMS pointed to the severe impact on multiple settlements, including Keikon, Nilakuthi, Koirangei, Maibakhul, Mongjam, Heingang, Kontha Achanbingei, Kontha Khabam, Kontha Ahulup, Kairang, Lairikyengbam Leikai, and Khurai. These areas have experienced repeated flooding, which has damaged homes, farmlands, and sources of livelihood.

AIMS expressed concern that despite the predictable nature of the floods, the government has failed to carry out regular cleaning, inspection, or upkeep of the Turel Lourambal. The group also noted the absence of any relief or compensation for affected residents.

The memorandum submitted to the Governor calls for three immediate actions: regular maintenance of the river ban, the formulation of a long-term flood management plan with community involvement, and urgent compensation for those affected.

“This issue is not just about floodwater, it’s about lives, homes, and a future that’s being washed away each year,” said Dr. Atom Sunil Singh, Director of AIMS, who signed the memorandum.

AIMS emphasised that proactive steps are crucial not just to prevent further damage but also to build resilience and ensure sustainable development in flood-prone parts of Manipur.
