Winged Visitors Return: Amur Falcons Begin Arriving in Manipur’s Tamenglong

Ukhrul, October 7: Migratory birds Amur Falcons have started flocking to Guangram village in Tamenglong district, Manipur, which serves as a crucial, year-round roosting site on Tuesday. Thousands of Amur falcons, locally known as Akhuaipuina/Tamuanpui, flock to Tamenglong district typically between October and November during their journey from Siberia to Southern Africa.

The Tamenglong Forest Division along with many NGO, village authorities, and youth clubs of Tamenglong district have been constantly carrying out protection of these migratory birds since 2015, an official statement said. 

As per the District Information Office (DIO), Forest Department, Manipur in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India will tag three more Amur falcons birds with satellite transmitters to continue the ongoing research works. 

“Tamenglong is in the international map for conserving these long distance migratory birds. This year also the Forest Department, Manipur in collaboration with the Wildlife Institute of India is going to tag three more Amur falcons birds with satellite transmitters to continue the ongoing research works,” it stated.

The most important roosting villages for the winged guests in Tamenglong are Chiuluan and Guangram, it stated. 

It further stated that the district administration and local communities will actively protect the Amur Falcons by issuing bans on hunting and trapping, and working to raise awareness about the birds’ significance.
