AR in Tengnoupal apprehends man with 10 gold biscuits worth Rs 93 lakh

Tengnoupal: A man was apprehended by troops of Assam Rifles for smuggling 10 gold biscuits worth over Rs 93 lakh (international market value) from Tengnoupal district on Thursday.

The accused, identified as Launjahao Vaihpei (34), a resident of Moreh, was illegally bringing nearly 1.6 kg of gold biscuits allegedly smuggled from Myanmar to India, police said.

Troops of 20 Assam Rifles manning the vehicle check post at Khudengthabi along NH-102 under Moreh police station of Tengnoupal district intercepted the gold biscuits during a check to a van the accused was driving today, around 8 am.

The vehicle was proceeding toward Imphal from Moreh, the police also said.

The accused along with the recovered items was handed over to Customs Preventive Forces, Moreh for further necessary legal action, the police added.

Notably, this is the second incident of seizure of smuggled gold biscuits reported in the recent time in the border town. Earlier, on February 25, troops of Assam Rifles seized 40 gold biscuits worth Rs 3.75 crore ( international market value).
