Massive Arms Cache Recovered, Illegal Poppy Cultivation Destroyed in Manipur

Imphal, Jan 16: In Manipur, search operations and area domination continued in the fringe and vulnerable areas of hill and valley districts and security forces recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition in Thoubal and Bishnupur districts.

One 9 mm CMG magazine, four 36 HE hand grenades, 27 live rounds, 7.62×39 mm empty cases numbering 117, one Helican Antenna, five Ni-Cad Battery, three tear smoke shell soft noses (SR), one chilli tear smoke shell, one arming ring, one detonator, three radio sets, one radio set charger, two radio set adapters, and three radio set antennas were recovered from Salam Patong village areas under Nongpok Sekmai Police Station, Thoubal district, a police report said on Thursday.

One 51 mm mortar tube launcher, one SLR with magazine, one sniper rifle, three 40 mm lathode shells, four live rounds of SLR, four 36 HE grenades, one smoke bomb, one 12 bore cartridge, five .303 blank cartridges, six rubber bullets, three tear smoke shells, one tear smoke shell, one chilli tear smoke shell, three stunt shells, one HE MK-I, two WT sets, three pairs of camouflage long pants, two magazine pouches, and two pairs of hunting shoes were also recovered from the adjoining fringe area of Aigejang and Leimaram Uyok Ching under Nambol Police Station, Bishnupur district, the police report also said.

Meanwhile, a combined team of security forces destroyed illegal poppy cultivation on 4.8 acres in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on Wednesday.

A joint team of Manipur Police, Assam Rifles, Forest Department and Executive Magistrate conducted the poppy plant destruction drive at Haopi Mollen Hill range under Sangaikot Police Station, Churachandpur district, as per a police report.

They also destroyed six poppy pods during the drive, the report said.

An FIR has been registered and efforts are on to identify and book the poppy cultivators, it said.
