Imphal: The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), in a statement on Thursday, alleged that Union Home minister Amit Shah’s whimsical remarks showed that the centre does not take the ongoing ethnic crisis in Manipur.

The statement signed by COCOMI media coordinator Yumkhaibam Surjitkumar Khuman also questioned the intention of the central government in the ongoing violence.

It said that the people of the state were surprised when the Union Home minister stated, in an interview with Economic Times on May 9, that the violence in Manipur is not terrorism.

In the interview, note here, Amit Shah dismissed claims that the violence that broke out in Manipur between the Kuki and Meitei communities in May 2023 was ‘terrorism.’

“Instead of taking concrete steps to resolve the crisis, the central leader continued making irresponsible remarks. It is nothing but indicating that the central government is not taking the responsibility it owes to end the crisis,” COCOMI alleged in the statement.

The statement questioned whether the centre is unable to resolve the crisis.

“Now, the time has come that the indigenous people of the land know the ground reality of the origin of the crisis,” the COCOMI observed, while recalling various instances of terroristic activities like triggering of IEDs to cut the national highways, the lifeline of people of Manipur and deadly attacks on the central and the state security forces in the violently affected hill regions. Many of these acts were related to terrorism as defined by the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act 2002 enacted in the country,” COCOMI pointed out.
