Imphal: The Congress party in Manipur on Thursday reiterated that it will continue to oppose the Manipur government’s decision to legalize liquor.

A cabinet meeting chaired by chief minister N Biren Singh on September 20 last decided to partially lift the prohibition.

Various organisations particularly women based bodies and some political parties opposed the government decision and are still pressing to roll back the decision.

Addressing a press conference at the Congress Bhavan here today, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) vice president and senior spokesperson Hareshwar Goshwami alleged that the state government is not telling the real reasons for partially lifting the prohibition.

The government said that the decision to legalize liquor was not for revenue that can be generated after legalization but for controlling the quality of the locally brewed liquor. The MPCC leader rejected the reason given by the state government.

The reality is that the government is financially bankrupt and had taken the decision while searching for a source for easing the same, the MPCC leader alleged.

Even the World Health Organization (WHO) had declared liquor as toxicant and harmful to health. So, legalization of liquor is nothing but to kill people with slow poisoning, Hareshwar Goshwami further alleged.

The Congress party strongly opposed the government decision and the state government should roll back the decision, he demanded.
