Ukhrul, June 20: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills, has called a total shutdown from 1 PM on Friday, June 20, 2025, to 6 PM on Saturday, June 21, 2025, in response to what it described as “the brutal killing” of Hoikohling, the Chief of Langchingmanbi Village. The shutdown is a mark of protest and mourning against what CoTU described as a “cold-blooded” and “targeted” killing, CoTU said.

According to a press statement issued by CoTU on Thursday night, Hoikohling was mercilessly shot on the afternoon of June 19 and later succumbed to her injuries. The tribal body expressed deep sorrow and outrage, condemning the killing as part of a broader pattern of “state-sponsored ethnic cleansing” against the Kuki-Zo minority.

“This heinous act is not an isolated incident,” CoTU said. “It is yet another targeted assault in what has now become a systematic campaign… The Committee holds the State Government directly responsible for allowing such atrocities to unfold under its watch.”

The release also criticized the silence and inaction of security forces and authorities, accusing them of enabling a culture of impunity. CoTU pointed to repeated violations in the Buffer Zone and alleged that Meitei aggressors were being allowed to act unchecked. It asserted that failure to protect vulnerable populations had once again led to loss of life.

CoTU put forward the following three demands:

  1. Immediate action against those responsible for the killing.
  2. Concrete steps from the Central Government to safeguard tribal lives and territories.
  3. An independent investigation into repeated violations of Buffer Zone arrangements.

Calling upon all communities, institutions, organizations, and concerned individuals, CoTU urged strict observance of the shutdown as a united stand against what it terms a worsening situation for tribal people in the state.
