Ukhrul: Thokchom Sujata, the Convenor of Imagi Meira, a prominent women’s association in Manipur, was reportedly placed under house arrest by Delhi Police ahead of a planned protest commemorating Nupi Lan Day at Jantar Mantar on Thursday. The protest, organized under the banner of the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee, aimed to highlight ongoing violence in Manipur, including the abduction and killing of six women and children in Jiribam. As of Friday evening, Sujata remained under house arrest.
Sources revealed that Delhi Police intercepted Th. Sujata and two other women leaders from Manipur at their hotel, confining them to house arrest in a rented room in Mansaram Park, Uttam Nagar, Delhi, citing security concerns. Sujata strongly condemned the police action, questioning its intent to suppress voices seeking justice for unresolved cases of violence in Manipur, including the disappearance of Laishram Kamalbabu from Leimakhong Army Camp and the recent killings in Jiribam District.
Meanwhile, Narmada Khumanthem, Convenor of the Women’s Wing of the Delhi Meitei Coordinating Committee, criticized the action as a violation of democratic rights and demanded an immediate public explanation from Delhi Police. Sujata’s house arrest comes as tensions in Manipur remain high, with persistent demands for justice and peace in the violence-stricken state.
