The courtesy call was more than just a formal visit. According to an official Facebook post by Raj Bhavan Manipur, Governor Bhalla extended heartfelt appreciation to the Indian Army for the successful execution of Operation Sindoor, lauding their dedication to maintaining peace and stability in the region. The Governor’s praise reflected the Army’s ongoing involvement in the security landscape of the conflict-hit state.

General Dwivedi, in turn, expressed his gratitude for the continued support from the Manipur Government, especially in facilitating the smooth organisation of the Durand Cup Asia’s oldest football tournament and a symbol of sporting unity.

The opening match was a local derby that drew enthusiastic crowds and high energy. TRAU-FC and NEROCA-FC, two popular football clubs from Manipur, battled it out in a gripping contest that ended 1-1. The evenly matched game was a showcase of talent and tenacity.

TRAU took the lead in the 58th minute, when right-back Khunjamayum Raj Singh delivered a curling ball from near the corner flag that defied expectations and landed directly in the net. It was a moment of brilliance that gave TRAU the edge.

NEROCA quickly pushed back. While several attempts were thwarted by TRAU’s resolute defence, the equaliser finally came late in the game as pressure mounted especially after TRAU’s Dhanachandra Mutum was sent off in the 73rd minute following a second yellow card.

Despite playing with 10 men, TRAU managed to hold their ground. Notably, goalkeeper Sapam Singh made a stunning save in the 86th minute, diving left to stop a powerful header from NEROCA substitute Arunkumar Singh, ensuring the match ended in a hard-fought draw.
