Imphal, August 7: Heavy rains breached the banks of the Moirang River early Wednesday, flooding a relief camp at the Sericulture Farm and forcing 37 displaced families to relocate to safer areas.

The flooding began in the early hours when river water overflowed into the camp, submerging the area where families had sought refuge.

In response to the crisis, a medical team led by Dr. L. Raichandra, the Chief Medical Officer of Bishnupur, arrived at the scene alongside a team dispatched by the PRO of the Moirang MLA. They provided immediate medical care and distributed relief materials to the displaced families.

Efforts to salvage household items are ongoing, with Fire Service vehicles aiding in the cleanup of the flooded rooms.

Relief Camp Convenor Irom Abung explained that the situation escalated quickly after the riverbank gave way following the heavy rainfall. “We informed the District Administration and Police Station immediately,” Mr. Abung said. He added that the Arambai Tenggo team and internally displaced persons (IDPs) had made efforts to prevent the flooding but were ultimately overwhelmed by the rising waters.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation as recovery operations proceed.
