As I reflect on the recent events that have left an indelible mark on my life, one particular experience stands out like a gem in a treasure trove of memories – the Film Preservation Workshop organized by MSFDS (Manipur State Film Development Society). It wasn’t just an ordinary workshop; it was a convergence of unexpected opportunities and long-desired skills, all wrapped up in the enchanting world of cinema heritage.

It all began with a serendipitous encounter – a WhatsApp update from an alumni University CR, meticulously working on an old film reel. Intrigued, I reached out to discover that he was volunteering at MSFDS, where they welcomed film and archive enthusiasts like me with open arms. The prospect of immersing myself in the art of film preservation alongside the esteemed Film Conservator, Johnson Rajkumar, was simply too enticing to resist.

From April 4th to 6th, 2024, I found myself partaking in a three-day intensive workshop led by Johnson Rajkumar himself, a maestro in the realm of film preservation. His accolades, including the prestigious Champions of Film Heritage Award 2022, only added to the anticipation of what lay ahead. Over the course of those days, we delved into a myriad of topics – from the preservation of film, video, audio, to the intricacies of digitization techniques.

But the workshop was more than just theoretical knowledge; it was a hands-on journey through the archive of cinematic history. We learned the delicate art of handling, recoiling, identifying, and cleaning old film reels and posters, bridging the gap between past and present.

One of the unexpected delights of the workshop was the accommodation provided at the “Art Retreat” guest room – a cozy haven with a touch of creativity and warmth. Nestled within MSFDS’s premises, the Art Retreat offered not only a comfortable stay but also a glimpse into the tranquil beauty of Manipur. From the spacious rooms to the inviting lawn adorned with wooden trunk seats, every corner exuded a sense of homely charm.

Thanks to the gracious hospitality of Sunzu Bhachaspatimayum, the secretary, my stay extended beyond the workshop, allowing me to immerse myself in the festivities of Mami Numit (Birth of cinema). Five days felt like a blink of an eye, as MSFDS became my temporary home away from home.

The presence of the guest house not only enhanced my experience but also served as a testament to MSFDS’s commitment to fostering a welcoming environment for film enthusiasts from far and wide. With accommodation taken care of, travelers need not worry about logistics, allowing them to focus solely on their passion for cinema preservation.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to Sunzu and Sir Johnson for their generosity and guidance throughout this enriching experience. As I look ahead, I eagerly anticipate volunteering and contributing to the noble cause of film preservation, ensuring that the magic of cinema endures for generations to come.

In retrospect, the Film Preservation Workshop at MSFDS was not just a workshop; it was a transformative journey that opened my eyes to the beauty and significance of preserving our cinematic heritage. It’s these unexpected moments that truly make life unforgettable.
