Ukhrul, Jan 11: Residents of the Kasom Khullen Block in Kamjong District stormed a makeshift Assam Rifles camp at Hongbei village, accusing the paramilitary personnel of harassment and creating a public nuisance.

The incident reportedly occurred when villagers of the area protested against the frisking and harassment by the Assam Rifles along the Imphal-Myanmar (Burma) road via Kasom Khullen Block.

According to reliable sources, the confrontation started when the Assam Rifles allegedly barred the transportation of timber intended for house construction in a neighboring village. Despite the local MLA Leishiyo Keishing’s intervention, the Assam Rifles refused to allow the materials to be transported. Hearing this, the area’s women gathered in the village to protest against the Assam Rifles’ actions.

In a verified video, the MLA is heard speaking to an AR officer in charge, that the jurisdiction belongs to the Forest Department of Manipur.

As of the time of filing this report, MLA Leishiyo Keishing was reportedly engaged in discussions with Assam Rifles officials to address the situation. The protesters have also stood their ground demanding the removal of the security personnel from the area.

It is worth noting that the Assam Rifles recently opened the outpost at the village against the people’s wishes. Commuters have often complained of frisking and harassment by the security personnel.
