UKHRUL: The Sadar Hills Kuki Women’s Union, along with the villages of Mongkot Chepu and Zalengbung, has expressed outrage over the recent situation affecting Kuki villages in Ukhrul District. In a press statement, the Kuki Women’s Union condemned the brutal killing of two innocent Kuki civilians in an attack by ‘Tangkhul militants’ on April 24, 2026, at Mulam Village.
The union stated that the deceased (L) Paominlun Haolai and (L) Letlal Sitlhou were innocent civilians courageously defending their ancestral land and community. “We are deeply outraged by the cold-blooded shooting of these two Kuki civilians by Tangkhul militants and condemn it in the strongest terms,” stated the union.

Furthermore, the union denounced the burning of homes, injuries, and the immense suffering inflicted on innocent women, children, and families in Mullam Songphel Village and neighboring villages. They described these acts as barbaric and as grave violations of human rights, which cannot be justified under any circumstances. The union called on the government to take decisive measures to ensure justice, safety, and security for the affected communities.
Meanwhile, the villagers of Zalengbung reported a series of attacks on Kuki villages by NSCN-EF cadres based in Thawai villages. They indicated that the attacks persisted from 5:45 PM on April 24 until 7:00 AM on April 25, despite the presence of security forces in the area. “The security forces deployed in the region appear to lack the adequate authority from the state government to intervene effectively. As the protection of our village and our people is our fundamental responsibility, we were compelled to retaliate in self-defense,” they stated.

The villagers also alleged that the government had failed in its duty to secure the safety of the Kuki community. They expressed support for the demands put forward by the Women’s Coalition of Kuki Civil Society Organizations (WCKCSOs) for the merger of Kuki villages in Ukhrul District with Kangpokpi District.
Additionally, the Mongkot Chepu village reported a series of attacks on April 24 and 25, again despite the presence of security forces. “These repeated incidents highlight the serious security challenges faced by vulnerable communities in the region,” they noted, adding that the villagers were falsely accused of initiating the firing, which was actually caused by the supersonic bullets used by Tangkhul militants.

Despite the deployment of security forces, it was evident that they had not been granted sufficient authority or operational mandate by the state government to effectively prevent such attacks. “In the face of these repeated assaults and in the absence of timely intervention, the village volunteers of Mongkot Chepu felt compelled to retaliate in self-defense to protect their homes and their people,” they stated, reiterating support for the merger of Kuki villages in Ukhrul District with Kangpokpi District.
