Landslide in Manipur: One more body recovered, death toll now 56, 5 still missing

Noney: On the day 18 of the search and rescue operation, one more dead body of a woman was recovered from the debris of the landslide at Marangjing area of Manipur’s Noney district.

The body was later identified to be that of Thiusinliu Gondoimei (34) who was among the five villagers who remained missing after the tragic landslide.

The dead body was recovered from the debris at the site where the deceased woman used to work along with her husband who was also among the still missing people.

Five villagers including the body recovered today, a pregnant woman and a minor girl went missing after the landslide hit on the intervening night of June 29 and 30.

The body was recovered around 11 am and it took the death toll from the massive landslide at the railway line construction site to 56.

With the recovery of one more body, five out of 79 affected by the devastating landslide hit the railway construction site at Marangching area of Noney district where a camp of the 107 Territorial Army (TA) also located, are still missing.

The search and rescue operation launched by a Joint Task Force comprising Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, Army Medical Doctors, Manipur police, fire service personnel and local volunteers entered its 18th day on Sunday.

Of the 79 people, mostly personnel of the TA affected by the tragic landslide, 18 persons were able to be rescued alive on the first day of the rescue operation.

A Joint Task Force comprising Army, Assam Rifles, NDRF, SDRF, CRPF, Army Medical Doctors, Manipur police, fire service personnel and local volunteers have launched the search and rescue operation.

The rescue team recovered 56 dead bodies from the debris so far and five others remained missing.
