Major Bhupendra Mehra Football Championship begins

CHANDEL: In its continued commitment to promote peace, harmony, and youth engagement in the region, the Assam Rifles organised the opening ceremony of the “Major Bhupendra Mehra Football Championship” at Chakpikarong on Monday.

The initiative aims to encourage football as a unifying sport while strengthening the bond between the local community and security forces, the IGAR(S) said.

The grand inauguration commenced at 11:00 AM at the Chakpikarong Football Ground, graced by Colonel Yuvraj Chougale, Commandant of 43 Assam Rifles, who attended as the Chief Guest. Distinguished representatives from the Ex-Servicemen Organisation of Chandel district were also present, adding significance to the occasion.

The ceremony opened with a warm and melodious welcome song presented by the youth of Chakpikarong, followed by an invocation prayer led by the Pastor which set the tone for an uplifting series of cultural performances, including traditional dances and musical presentations by members of the local populace.

The event witnessed an impressive turnout of nearly 500 attendees, including all Village Chiefs, GBs, and representatives from various Anal community civil society organisations, showcasing strong communal participation and support.

The eight-day tournament, scheduled from December 8-26, 2025, will feature 16 competitive football teams vying for attractive prize money, with Rs 90,000 awarded to the champion and Rs 50,000 to the runner-up. Additionally, friendly matches between four veteran teams of the Armed Forces will add a spirit of camaraderie and nostalgia to the event.

Through this championship, organised under Operation Sadbhavna, the Assam Rifles has created a meaningful platform for local youth to engage in sports, interact with security personnel and veterans, and strengthen ties that contribute to long-term peace and stability in the region, the IGAR(S) said.
