Man arrested for inciteful Facebook post calling to attack Manipur Police

Three days after they had warned against derogatory comments, Manipur police have arrested a 28-year-old man who allegedly called to attack police on social media for the poppy plant destruction drive by the police in Churachandpur district.

Thangpilun Haokip (28), presently residing at Langol locality of Imphal, was arrested on Sunday, police said in a statement.

Police alleged that Haokip called for violence on a Facebook post against the police team for a poppy plant destruction drive.

He was protesting against the destruction of poppy fields in Churachandpur district on November 20 by a combined team of Churachandpur district police, NAB, district forest officials and district administration.

On the day, poppy plants in around 20 acres of field in the Lanva upstream of Teiseng area of the district were destroyed to mark the beginning of this year’s drive against illicit poppy cultivation.

The police statement added that “his inciting comment” giving a call for violence attack on police was at a time while the state government is giving its best efforts in the fight against the drugs.

The police statement said that the Police department was very disturbed to learn about some individuals trying to incite violence against police teams who are on duty to destroy the poppy fields.
