Imphal: Leaders and workers of the BJP on Thursday burnt effigies of AICC leaders as they held protests in Imphal against Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for his remark on President Draupadi Murmu.

Tension prevailed between the Congress and the BJP when the latter burnt effigies of AICC leaders in front of Congress Bhavan here, the office of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).

A large number of BJP workers led by BJYM president Barish Sharma burnt effigies of Sonia Gandhi and other AICC leaders right at the gate of the Congress Bhavan.

While burning the effigies, they shouted various slogans against Congress party and AICC leaders while vowing to work tirelessly to root out Congress from Manipur.

The protesters further demanded an apology from the AICC chief and Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury for the “derogatory” remarks against President Droupadi Murmu.

BJP workers also strongly condemned the burning of effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home minister Amit Shah recently by workers of the MPCC during a protest against repeated summon of AICC chief Sonia Gandhi. Meanwhile, strongly decrying the act of the BJP workers, MPCC today lodged a written complaint to the City police station to arrest leaders of the BJYM including its president Barish Sharma.

Before lodging the complaint, a large number of MPCC workers marched a protest rally from Congress Bhavan toward the City police station.
The rally was blocked by the police midway and allowed only some leaders to proceed and lodge the complaint to the officer in-charge. Talking to reporters, MPCC general secretary Jiten Soibam said that the act of the BJP was against the law and constitution of India.
