Manipur: Center extends SoO agreement with Kuki militants for 12 months

Imphal: The tripartite Suspension of Operation (SoO) agreement between the Government of India, Manipur government and the two umbrella groups of Kuki militants, United People’s Front (UPF) and Kuki National Organisation (KNO) has been extended for another 12 months.

The SoO agreement with the UG groups was due to expire on February 28, 2023. The extension will come into effect from March 1, 2023 till February 29, 2024.

“Based on mutual understanding of all the parties, the SoO is further extended by all the parties for another 12 more months. The agreed ground rules will remain unchanged,” it stated.

The tripartite meet held in New Delhi on February 17, 2023, with the Government of India and Manipur was attended by representatives of UPF, Ketheos Zomi and Joshua Thadou and spokesperson of KNO Dr Seilen Haokip.

Devesh Deval, resident commissioner, represented the government of Manipur, while Piyush Goyal, additional secretary (NE), Ministry of Home Affairs, represented the Government of India.

It is worth noting that the first SoO agreement was signed with the Kuki militants on August 22, 2008 and extended from time to time through the agreement from the three parties involved.
