Imphal: Expressing resentment over the manner in which the Manipur Assembly session was convened today, the Congress party said that today was the “dark day in the history of the parliamentary democracy of India.”

The Congress party hoisted a black flag while announcing that the day will be observed as a “dark day” by the party.

Addressing reporters at Congress Bhavan here, CLP leader and former chief minister O Ibobi Singh said the BJP-led government in Manipur made mockery of the parliamentary democracy, while lambasting the government on the manner in which the Assembly session was conducted today.

Ibobi Singh alleged that the government disregarded the rules and procedures of the assembly.

The Opposition proposed various agendas including private member resolution to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur while deliberating on the crisis prevailing in the state, he said.

The Congress members proposed a resolution to be passed by the House during the recent meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC), focusing on maintaining peace, safeguarding integrity, and resolving the current crisis.

However, the BAC did not entertain any of the agenda proposed by the Opposition. Besides, the government did not propose any similar agenda, Ibobi also said.

He alleged that the way the House met today and the government’s failure to listen to the Opposition’s request “is nothing but murder of democracy”.

“At the same time, the government did not clarify whether the session was an emergency, short notice or a regular one even as the members of the Opposition wished to know,” he also said.

“If it was a regular session, the Governor should have summoned it 15 days prior to the scheduled session. However, this was not done”, he also said.

“So, today’s session would not be a regular session as the notification regarding summoning of the session by the Governor was not given timely”, Ibobi added.
