Manipur: Police retrieve cache of arms and ammunition

Imphal: In the ongoing search operation in the fringe and vulnerable areas of the violent-hit districts of Manipur, the police on Thursday recovered a cache of arms and explosives from the foothill on the south of Sadu Nepali Basti of Churachandpur district adjoining Bishnupur district.

A cache of arms and explosives was intercepted by a team of Bishnupur district police commandos in a joint operation with the troops of 5 Sikh Regiment and SSB, a police source said.

The recovered cache included one carbine, one MK-2 Stand with one magazine, one Anti Riot Gun, one local made .303 Rifle, one country made 9mm with one empty magazine, six tear gas smoke shell, three grenade tube launchers, 13 hand grenades, one Chinese hand grenade, 11 rounds of 5.56 mm ammunitions, three 7.62 mm cartridges, five grenade launching ring and one bullet proof jacket.

The cache was intercepted in the joint operation conducted based on special input of the state police about caching of arms, ammunition and explosives in the foothills of Sadu Nepali  Basti between Laimanai Road and Khoijarok Nalla under Loktak police station collaborated with a report about movement of miscreants in the general area there, the source said.

The operation was conducted after cordoning the suspected areas from 6 am and lasted till 9.30 am,

The area being under the operational jurisdiction of the Loktak police station, a case has been registered in the police station for further investigation, the source added.

Meanwhile, Manipur police on Thursday retrieved the bullet-ridden dead body of a man from the roadside along NH-102 (Imphal-Moreh section) near Coffee Culture Farm at Waithou under Lilong police station of Thoubal district.

A team of Lilong police station who rushed to the spot on being informed by the locals nearby retrieved the dead body in the morning, around 5.30 am.

The police said that the blind folded dead body has a bullet wound mark on his head.

The police suspected the man whose identity could not be established immediately was shot dead by miscreants who brought him there as locals told that they heard gun firing sound last night, around 9pm.

The police transferred the dead body to RIMS morgue for identification and other official procedures.
