Manipur police seize brown sugar worth Rs 18 Cr

Imphal: A joint team of Manipur police commandos and Customs division of Imphal recovered a huge quantity of brown sugar worth over Rs 18 crore during a raid at a rented house at Kontha Ahalup under Heingang police station in Imphal East,  police said on Friday.

Personnel of the special commando unit of the state police and officials of the Customs division raided the house last night, the police also said.
In the raid, brown sugar packed in 175 soap cases was recovered. The value of the confiscated brown sugar would be over Rs 18 crore in the international market, the source said.

The owners of the contraband drug could not be arrested as he was not at home during the raid.

However, the joint team identified the owners as Md Rafique (45) and his wife Zanat (44) of Moreh town.

The Customs division took custody of the illegal drugs after registering a case against the yet to be arrested couple.

Efforts are on to arrest the husband and wife duo, the police further said.
