Ukhrul, Feb 10: A day after the high-stakes political upheaval in Manipur following the resignation of N. Biren Singh as Chief Minister, the Manipur Congress has opposed the imposition of President’s Rule or the suspension of the Manipur State Assembly. The party advocates for a democratically elected government to uphold democracy in the state.

The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, Keisham Meghachandra Singh, took to X and stated, “For the people of Manipur, the Congress party opposes any move to impose President’s Rule in Manipur now, as well as any move to place the Manipur Legislative Assembly under suspended animation. The Congress party wants a democratically elected, popular government in Manipur in the larger interest of safeguarding democracy in the state.”

Amidst speculation, the imposition of President’s Rule is seen as a possible step by the Central government to restore stability in a state that has been grappling with ethnic conflict for nearly two years since May 3, 2023.

N. Biren Singh, who was elected from the Heingang Assembly Constituency, first became Chief Minister of Manipur on March 15, 2017. He was re-elected for a second term after the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly elections, in which the BJP secured a comfortable majority, winning 32 out of 60 seats.

These political developments come amid heightened discussions about the stability of the BJP-led government in Manipur, with the party leadership actively working towards a smooth transition of power, or, ultimately the possibility of President’s Rule being imposed in the state.
