Manipur Speaker Withdraws Controversial Sep 1 Order

The Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker has withdrawn the controversial order of September 1 inducting 9 valley MLAs as members to Hill Areas Committee with immediate effect.

The order issued today said the withdrawal of the newly inducted Hill Areas Committee members was done “in order to facilitate better understanding amongst all the stakeholders in this matter,” citing 5/11(2)/2021-LA(Secy) September 1, 2021 order by the speaker.

Dr Lorho S Pfoze, member of Parliament, Outer Manipur Parliamentary Constituency wrote to the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind in a five page letter on September 3 urging immediate intervention to the matter, which he added may likely cause social disharmony and tension between hills and valley.

Dr Lorho urged the President for revocation of Manipur Legislative Assembly speaker’s September 1 order. The letter addressed the action of the speaker as ultra-vires, violative of provisions of Article 371C of the Indian Constitution and said his actions was in total disregard to the Presidential Order dated 20th June 1972.
