Meet Salmon N G, Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Awardee for his (Tangkhul) Folk Music

Salmon N G of Manipur’s Ukhrul district, Ringui Village was awarded with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) celebrations marking India’s 75 years of independence in 2023. The award was presented by the Vice President of India, Jagdeep Dhankhar in New Delhi on September 16, 2023.

Salmon N G was honoured with the national award in the field of Tribal Musice/Dance for his Folk Music from the State of Manipur. Along with Salmon N G, 85 other exceptional artists who have made significant contributions to the performing arts in the country were recognized and honoured.

Born in December 1, 1938 in Ringui village of Ukhrul district, Salmon N G imbibed the rich musical tradition of the region at an early age. He received his initial training in folk music from N G Khuso and later was groomed under the guidance of N G Seising.

Salmon N G has performed folk songs and dance extensively in Manipur as well as in other States of the country. He has trained many students of Ringui village. He published his biography in the year 2018 titled N G Salmon Short Life Story and Ringui Ngalei Ram and composed many folk songs.

It is worth noting that the Sangeet Natak Akademi Amrit Award was introduced by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India’s National Academy of Music, Dance, and Drama.
