Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma Pledges Aggressive Action Against Drug Menace with New Initiatives

Shillong, Sep 25: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said his government is working aggressively towards eradicating the problem of drug menace from the state. “The government is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the action is taken in this entire war against drugs,” Sangma told reporters.

He said the government is very serious and is aggressively taking action to cut down and to really control the situation. He said the PIT NDPS Act is being implemented to address the issue.

“The fact that 450 arrests were made and 250 cases are on and hundreds and hundreds of crores of drugs have been seized is clearly a reflection of the government’s seriousness and the actions that we are taking,” Sangma said..

The chief minister also emphasized the need to work together to fight against drug menace and said, “Recently, I have come out with a order of putting up one committee headed by an additional deputy commissioner in different cities and towns of the state, in different district headquarters and ADC of that particular district would head the committee and the different Rangbah Shnong or development committees, or headmen of different localities would be part of this and different society members will be part of this. The idea that we need society to work together, If you have to really handle this entire menace of drugs.”

Stating that many steps are also being taken in this regard, Sangma said, “The DREAM project that we have started is also showing results at the grassroot level. This step we have taken recently is another clear indication of the government’s seriousness.”

On the other hand, the chief minister said that the drug issue is a very complicated problem as it goes beyond the state’s borders and even beyond the country’s borders for that matter.

“So it’s a very complicated problem in front of us but as I said everybody from the Government of India to the different state governments, to the district administration, we are ensuring that everybody becomes a part of this entire solution to the problem and we are able to control this drug menace,” he stated.
