Shillong: The Meghalaya state government has sanctioned grants of over Rs 950 crore to the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) during the last year alone.

This was informed by the power minister AT Mondal while responding to a query on the recent decision of the Association of Power Engineers (AOPE) to protest if the MeECL fails to address the issue related to the diploma cadre.

“We feel that their grievances have to be addressed, but at the same time, we got to see that financial stability (of the MeECL) is also there. Both should go side by side. We are very much favorable to look into their grievances, but MeECL’s position has increased,” Mondal said.

He added that the issue is the affairs of the MeECL and “We hope the MeECL will tide over the situation”.

Asserting the need to understand the financial condition of MeECL, the power minister said, “Every year till today the government is giving financial grants to MeECL to run the show.”

“Almost Rs 24 crore, we are paying for the salary component, Rs 12 crore for pension component…on an average, you can say Rs 40-50 crore is going every month. If you calculate, it is a huge amount. Last year, we had to grant Rs 950 crore to MeECL,” he added.
