AGARTALA, FEB 12: Mizoram’s hotel and restaurant owners, daily commuters, and household consumers could soon benefit from significantly reduced energy expenditure, as the state government on Thursday took a decisive step towards establishing a City Gas Distribution network, convening a joint sensitization workshop with Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL) at ATI Auditorium, MINECO, Aizawl.
The workshop, jointly organised by Mizoram’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs (FCS&CA) Department and Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL), was presided over by FCS&CA Minister Pu B. Lalchhanzova as the chief guest.
Addressing participants, Minister Lalchhanzova made a strong case for expedited implementation, pointing to the economic relief a functional piped gas network could deliver. He noted that in states where City Gas Distribution is already operational, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) serves not only as a domestic cooking fuel but also as a cost-effective alternative for vehicles, a dual utility he expressed hope Mizoram would replicate in due course.

Minister emphasized that those engaged in Mizoram’s hotel and restaurant trade stand to gain most immediately from the initiative, as piped natural gas would “reduce expenditure” considerably for the hospitality sector. He further expressed confidence that Mizoram’s broader economy would register a positive difference once the network is operationalised at scale.
Meanwhile, the Minister also highlighted the importance of robust public outreach, describing the workshop participants as partners in the state’s development and urging them to lead awareness efforts at the grassroots level.
The workshop marks a concrete milestone in Mizoram’s push to modernise its energy infrastructure and align with the national City Gas Distribution programme.
