Mizoram CM says Center’s move to fence Indo-Myanmar border ‘not acceptable’

Aizawl: Mizoram chief minister Lalduhoma has opposed the Center’s move to fence the Indo-Myanmar border and says it is ‘unacceptable’.

The newly elected chief minister of Mizoram who is in Delhi to meet the central leadership also met the minister of external affairs S Jaishankar on Wednesday evening.

“The British had separated the Mizos by carving out Burma from India. They divided the Mizo ethnic people’s land from ancient days into two parts. That is why we cannot accept the border, instead, we always dream of becoming a nation under one administration,” said Lalduhoma to Jaishankar.

This latest development comes days after the Center set for smart fencing system for the entire Indo-Myanmar border to check illegal immigrants from across the border. In addition, the ministry also plans to scrap the Free Movement Regime (FMR) to counter the insurgents and surge of illegal cross border.

The FMR policy allows people residing on either side of the Indo-Myanmar border to travel within 16 km without a visa.

India shares 1,643 km of border with Myanmar, running along Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram.

On Thursday, Lalduhoma also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed various issues.
