Ukhrul, March 29, 2025: The powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on March 28, has left at least 1,002 people dead and 2,376 injured, according to official figures from the country’s military government.

The quake hit at 3:00 PM local time, just 17.2 kilometers from Mandalay and at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, as reported. The shallow epicenter intensified the shaking, bringing down buildings, damaging infrastructure, and leaving thousands stranded. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock, further complicating rescue operations. Tremors were felt across Myanmar and in neighboring Thailand, India, Bangladesh, and parts of China.

Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, bore the brunt of the destruction, with hospitals overwhelmed and power and communication lines severed. Early local reports confirmed at least 144 deaths in the city alone on March 28, with officials warning that the toll could rise as emergency crews reach remote areas. Homes, schools, and temples collapsed, trapping many under rubble.

Beyond Myanmar, Thailand experienced major damage, with a high-rise collapse in Bangkok claiming at least seven lives, as per reports. Tremors were also reported in Chiang Mai and other northern regions. In India’s Northeastern states such as Assam and Manipur felt the quake but reported no major damage.

Following the earthquake India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X, “Concerned by the situation in the wake of the Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Praying for the safety and wellbeing of everyone. India stands ready to offer all possible assistance. In this regard, asked our authorities to be on standby. Also asked the MEA to remain in touch with the Governments of Myanmar and Thailand.”
