Imphal, Oct 17: Political activity in Manipur appears to be gaining momentum as BJP MLA Thounaojam Shyamkumar of Andro assembly constituency has indicated that a new popular government is likely to be formed after November 15.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday at Andro, Imphal East, during a function organised by Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, Shyamkumar said that central BJP leaders have assured party legislators that the long-awaited formation of a new government in Manipur will take place soon.

“During our recent meeting with the central leadership, we were told that a new popular government will be formed after November 15,” Shyamkumar revealed. “As for the leadership issue, everyone has aspirations, but we are ready to accept and support the party’s choice of leader.”

The MLA further pointed out that the current period of President’s Rule since February cannot be extended indefinitely. “Our central leaders made it clear that a new government will be in place soon,” he added.

The assurance follows a series of high-level meetings among BJP MLAs held in New Delhi earlier this month. On October 8, party legislators, including former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, had met with senior BJP figures to push for the formation of a new government.

During their visit to the national capital, the MLAs held separate rounds of talks with BJP’s North East in-charge Sambit Patra and National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santosh. Party insiders said the discussions centred on restoring an elected government, addressing the state’s prolonged political instability, and tackling key issues such as the rehabilitation of displaced persons and ensuring the free movement of goods and people along national highways.

Manipur has remained under President’s Rule since February 13, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid an ongoing ethnic and political crisis that began in May 2023. Since then, repeated consultations have taken place among BJP legislators in Imphal, Guwahati, and Delhi, but no consensus leadership has yet been announced.

Despite the uncertainty, Shyamkumar asserted that the BJP MLAs remain united and committed to following the central leadership’s guidance. “We are all together and waiting for the party’s decision. Once the direction comes from the Centre, we are ready,” he said.
