DIMAPUR, AUG 18: Prominent Naga peace activist Niketu Iralu passed away today in New Delhi. He was reportedly 91. Dr. Niketu Iralu was born on July 12, 1935.
Reports said he was unwell, and following this, he was admitted to BLK Hospital in New Delhi. He passed away this evening. Details are awaited till the filing of this report.
His funeral service is scheduled for August 18 at 9:30 PM at the Nagaland State Guest House, Sector 12, R.K. Puram, Delhi.
Niketu Iralu was one of the key persons behind the formation of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR). He got many awards for his peace activism. One of the important awards he received is the Initiatives of Change (IofC) International Lifetime Achiever Award 2025. He was awarded this prize in recognition of his immense contributions to peacebuilding and reconciliation.

Niketu Iralu was such an inspiring light who guided the work of so many of the country’s youth in dialogue, reconciliation and peace initiatives – a glorious life of action, imagination and pedagogical pathways. Always kind, always humorous and always practicing what he preached. He leaves behind a huge legacy and difficult shoes to fill.
Meanwhile, the Naga People’s Front (NPF) said it was deeply saddened and grieved to learn of the passing away of Niketu Iralu this evening in New Delhi.
The NPF said Iralu was a veteran Naga peace activist and a towering figure whose life was an embodiment of compassion, courage, and unwavering commitment to the Naga people. He was a prominent voice for peace and reconciliation, and served as a core guiding force in the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR), the NPF added.
He dedicated himself selflessly to the cause of peace, healing, and trust-building among the Nagas, at a time when it was most needed. Through dialogue, forgiveness, and moral clarity, Iralu became a voice of reason and a bridge between communities, the NPF also said.
“His wisdom, humility, and tireless service have inspired countless individuals across generations. With his demise, the Naga society has lost one of its most sincere torchbearers of peace. The vacuum left by his departure will be deeply felt by the entire Naga family”, the NPF added.
At this moment of profound grief, the NPF extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family members, friends, and admirers.
