NSCN-EF Claims Drone Attack on Camp; Says Around 60 Bombs Exploded, Denies Casualties

UKHRUL: The NSCN-Eastern Flank’s Provisional Government has alleged that drones dropped around 60 bombs on Mt. Horeb Camp in the early hours of Sunday, claiming that parts of the camp were destroyed but no one was injured, as per Rural Post report.

According to report, the alleged attack began at around 2:30 am and continued until 4:30 am on October 11. The camp was rocked by successive explosions, with some bombs exploding mid-air and others striking trees and the camp directly. The report said there was no casualty at the time of filing report.

It may be noted that the alleged drone attack at Mt. Horeb Camp, the stronghold of NSCN-EF comes four days after India and Myanmar held their third Defence Cooperation Meeting in Guwahati on October 7. The meeting, co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh and Myanmar’s Chief of Armed Forces Training, Lieutenant General Pyae Sone Linn, reviewed existing defence cooperation initiatives and discussed further collaboration, particularly in training, capacity building and mutual security.

The alleged attack also comes eight days after a reported drone strike at Langkho village in Myanmar’s Sagaing Region on October 3, in which two people, including a nine-year-old girl, were reportedly injured. Ukhrul Times reported at the time that local sources had alleged Indian Army involvement in the attack.

No independent confirmation of the reported number of bombs, the extent of damage or the absence of casualties was available at the time of filing.

Reacting to the incident, senior journalist Rajeev Bhattacharyya wrote on X that he was “extremely doubtful about the Myanmar military’s role in this episode.”

Amid Myanmar’s ongoing civil war, which intensified after the February 2021 military coup and has involved fighting between the military junta, pro-democracy resistance forces and multiple ethnic armed organisations (EAOs), Bhattacharyya opined that the Myanmar military “would rather utilise resources to target the PDF or any EAO”.

Rural Post, breaking the news of the alleged attack at Mr. Horeb, in its report on Sunday said the NSCN-EF alleged that the drone attack could be “a handiwork of India waging a proxy war. But this has to be investigated”.
