UKHRUL: The ambush between Kotzin and Kotlen villages in Kangpokpi district, which left three leaders of the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA) dead and five other civilians injured, has sparked widespread outrage. In separate statements, the United Naga Council and the Rongmei Naga Council Manipur condemned the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
The UNC expressed its “sincere and deepest condolences to the bereaved families” and called upon civil society organisations, church leaders, and community leaders across communities to collectively stand against violence and work towards peaceful coexistence and communal harmony.
The council also alleged that more than 20 Nagas from Konsakhul village were being held hostage and appealed to those responsible to immediately release the captives allegedly being held at Leilon Vaiphei village. It stated that targeting innocent civilians and holding them hostage is unacceptable and violates the norms of a civilised society.
Meanwhile, the RNCM expressed grief and regret over the incident and urged the public to refrain from acts of violence and provocation. The council noted that the incident occurred in Kuki-dominated areas, and appealed to the public to avoid spreading speculation on social media and other platforms.
“Irresponsible approaches from individuals or groups might have a far-reaching impact on relations between communities,” the RNCM stated.
“Let us be sensitive enough, especially at this critical juncture, to logically analyse matters before jumping to conclusions and exercise maximum restraint to avoid becoming the cause of further destruction,” it added.
Both organisations concluded their statements by extending solidarity to the bereaved families and appealing for cooperation from the public.
