Sano Vamuzo: Padma Shri Recognition for Social Work Excellence in Nagaland

Kohima: In a distinguished acknowledgment of her exceptional contributions, Sano Vamuzo, a revered social worker from Nagaland, has been awarded the prestigious Padma Shri in the category of Social Work. The 83-year-old, hailing from Kohima, has dedicated over 40 years to advocating for peace and empowering children.

Sano Vamuzo, a founding member and the first president of the influential Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA), played a pivotal role in promoting peace campaigns and advancing women’s representation in Nagaland. Her tireless efforts also led her to become the first chairperson of the Nagaland State Commission for Women.

Meanwhile, congratulatory messages have begun pouring in since the announcement of Vamuzo winning the prestigious award. Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio took to social media and lauded Vamuzo for the great honor. In a post on the X platform, Rio expressed, “Congratulations to Smt. Sano Vamuzo on being conferred the Padma Shri award for her distinguished service in the field of Social Work. I wish her good health and a long life in the service of people. Best wishes for all her future endeavors.”

This accolade is part of the President of India’s approval for the conferment of 132 Padma Awards for the year 2024, 7 from the Northeast, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions to various fields. Notably, Sano Vamuzo stands out among the 110 awardees, showcasing her unwavering commitment to social work and community betterment.
