A notification issued on Thursday by Daryal Juli Anal, Joint Secretary of Higher Education, announced that government institutions, government-aided colleges, and state universities under its jurisdiction would reopen for regular classes on Friday. Similarly, Education (S) Director L. Nandakumar directed all schools, including private, government-aided, and central institutions, to resume operations, with Zonal Education Officers tasked to ensure smooth reopening.

The education sector in Manipur has faced frequent disruptions since the onset of unrest on May 3, 2023. Frequent closures, coupled with internet suspensions, have significantly impacted students’ academic progress, drawing widespread concern from citizens and organisations.

The Co-ordinating Committee on Disturbance-Free Educational Zone Demand (CDEFZ) on Wednesday urged the government to act decisively in safeguarding students’ academic futures. Speaking at a press conference at DESAM office in Kwakeithel, Committee Convenor Mayengbam Somorjit criticised the repeated closures as “unreasonable” and warned that further delays could lead to catastrophic consequences for the state’s education system.

Somorjit emphasised the need for the government to uphold rules ensuring educational institutions remain unaffected by external agitations. “Protecting the academic careers of students must be a priority to prevent a larger crisis,” he stated, calling for prompt action to insulate schools and colleges from the ongoing disturbances.
