Stern action against Zomi Students’ Federation for ‘The Inevitable Split’ book

Imphal: The Commissioner of Home Affairs under Manipur government in a letter to the Director General of Police ordered to take stern actions against person/persons of the Zomi Students’ Federation Union for publishing a book titled The Inevitable Split- Documents on State sponsored ethnic cleansing in Manipur, 2023.

In the letter, the Commissioner of Home Affairs ordered the state police to file an FIR and ban the book’s further publication.

In the letter to the DGP was enclosed a complaint letter filed by one Thokcham Punshiba Singh, Advocate BA, LB from Thangmeband Lourung Purel Leikai, Imphal West on June 22, 2023 for necessary action against the accused author and organization u/s 154, etc. of IPC and also to take appropriate steps to submit a detailed proposal to forfeit and issue necessary search warrants against the book under Sec 95 of Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973 by way of notification in Gazette at the earliest in public interest.

It may be noted that charges have been filed against three Kuki-Zomi individuals for an interview with Karan Thapar for The Wire show. Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East, Manipur summoned Prof Kham Khan Suan Hausing head of the University of Hyderabad’s political science department on July 6, on the basis of a complaint filed by one Moirangthem Manihar Singh who said Prof Suan made “derogatory statement against the holy religious site associated historically with Meitei community namely Khoubru, Thangjing and others and also false statement which accuses and defame the Meitei community…”

The other two Kuki-Zo activists are Mary Grace Zou, convenor of the Kuki Women’s Forum, and Wilson Lalam Hangshing, general secretary of the Kuki People’s Alliance.

Several eminent national student groups have condemned the charges against Prof Suan. The All India Students Association (AISA), National Students’ Union of India – University of Hyderabad (NSUI -HCU), Ambedkar Student’s Association – University of Hyderabad, Students’ Union – University of Hyderabad among others.
