Tamenglong: World Environment Day was observed at the Youth Hall of Tamenglong Baptist Church on Saturday under the theme, “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future.”
The programme was jointly organised by The Gaanphiu Mail, The Tamenglong Times and the Youth Ministry of Tamenglong Baptist Church, with sponsorship from the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Manipur.
Kachamthai Faiga Gangmei, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Tamenglong Autonomous District Council, attended the event as the chief guest. In his address, he stressed the importance of protecting the environment, stating that while Mother Earth has existed for millions of years and will continue to endure, it remains the responsibility of people to safeguard it.
He also highlighted the economic potential of horticulture over conventional agriculture, encouraging people to plant more trees, particularly cash crops, as a sustainable source of income. He added that maintaining cleanliness in Tamenglong town remains one of the priorities of his office.
Guest of Honour Joel Gangmei, Range Forest Officer (RFO), said that World Environment Day had been observed at several locations across the district, with nearly a lakh saplings planted in different areas. He noted that many individuals who invested in tree plantation, especially horticultural crops, had achieved economic success.
Pointing out that tribal communities live within biodiversity-rich regions, he urged people to derive sustainable benefits from forests and other natural resources while ensuring their conservation. He encouraged the cultivation of more cash crops and advocated for “green growth and renewable energy” as pathways towards environmental protection and economic development.
Tamenglong Baptist Church Pastor Rev. Lungdapou Riamei, in his message, said that the Earth belongs to God and that caring for creation is a reflection of reverence for the Creator. He urged the gathering to love and protect the environment and to act as responsible stewards of God’s creation.
The programme witnessed the participation of a large number of youths. A sapling plantation drive was launched at the church campus by the chief guest and guest of honour.
