Ukhrul, Dec 18: The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM) has called for normal operations of the Tribal Research Institute Office (TRI), Chingmeirong, from 15th January 2025 and warned of consequences in case of failing to comply with their demand. The Council issued this directive after finding the office in a non-functioning state since May 3rd, 2024.

In a press release, the body stated that it, along with media personnel, inspected the Tribal Research Institute office on 17th December. The body revealed that, during the inspection, only three staff members were present at the TRI office, and no programs were initiated or conducted since May 3, 2024. Besides, the offices of the Director and Research Officer-cum-Administrative Officer were found locked and operated from the Directorate of Tribal Affairs & Hills, Manipur, neglecting their physical presence at the TRI office.

The TYCM-GHQ stated that despite all Government Offices in the state resuming operations effectively since the beginning of 2024, the TRI office has not been functioning effectively to date. It added that the absence of the Director and Research Officer-cum-Administrative Officer from the TRI office has disrupted its operations, raising serious concerns about its ability to serve the tribal communities effectively.

The body also reported poor and unsatisfactory condition of the office with its premises scattered with animal waste highlighting the lack of maintenance and functionality.

The TYCM-GHQ noted that it had submitted an appeal to the concerned authorities on December 5th and subsequently a formal notice on December 17th urging the effective functioning of the TRI Office.

The Council then urged for the resumption of normal operations at the TRI Office, Chingmeirong by 15 January 2025, ensuring the physical presence of all staff, including the Director. It warned that the government and the concerned authorities would be solely responsible for any eventuality arising from continued neglect of the office.

“Restoring the effective functioning of the office is vital to addressing the concerns of the tribal communities and upholding the institute’s purpose,” it added.
