Ukhrul Observes World Earth Day

Ukhrul: The Ukhrul district observed World Earth Day 2024 at St. Joseph College. The Ukhrul District Working Journalists Association (UDWJA), in collaboration with the Department of Botany, Zoology and Social Work of St. Joseph College, Ukhrul sponsored by the Media Resource Centre, Directorate of Environment & Climate Change Government of Manipur observed Earth Day at the auditorium of St. Joseph College, Alungtang, Ukhrul.

Speaking at the observance, chief guest, Themreishang Marei, Executive Engineer (EE) PHED, Ukhrul while in exegesis on the theme “Planet Vs Plastic” expressed the central government’s ambitious programme on clean India (Swachh Bharat) to free our environment from pollution. He said, “observance of Earth Day is to remind us of safeguarding our mother earth.” He stressed the basic responsibility of every individual person and inter-relationship of air and water for a clean environment. 

Dr. L. Khamashon Head of Department of Zoology in his keynote address stated that “in 1990 earth day was observed globally knowing the necessity to phase out single use of plastic and its health risk to all living beings including human beings.”

Meanwhile, the BSW students of St. Joseph College performed a skit on “Let us restore our planet earth” based on reducing plastic through the collective effort of all. 

The chief guest also distributed prizes to the essay winner of Earth Day.

Subsequently, Themreishang launched the cleanliness drive programme at the college. 

The observance programme was attended by vice principal Rev. Sister Rengi, Chonchui CS Head of Department of Social Work, including the students of St. Joseph College of Ukhrul.
