UKHRUL: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced that the Lui-Ngai-Ni seed sowing festival of the Nagas in Manipur will be celebrated at Ukhrul on February 15, 2026, even as it reiterated its neutral stand in the ongoing ethnic conflict in the state.

In a press statement issued on the eve of the festival, the UNC stated that the declared position of the Nagas in Manipur since the outbreak of violence on May 3, 2023 has been one of “neutrality”, without fear or favour towards either the Meiteis or the Kuki-Zo-Hmar communities. The UNC said this position remains unchanged and is guided by the interest of peace and restoration of normalcy.

The UNC, however, expressed concern over recent incidents of violence in Litan and K. Lungwiram village under Ukhrul district. It referred to the alleged attack on Mr. Starling Shimray of Shakarphung on February 7, which reportedly triggered unrest in Litan, resulting in the burning of houses and damage to properties belonging to both Naga and Kuki communities. It also condemned the reported torching of the house of Mr. Azan Abonmai in the early hours of February 9 at K. Lungwiram.

The UNC stated that the situation must be resolved without further escalation. It raised concern over the reported presence of armed Kuki militants and allegations that security forces facilitated arson attacks on Naga houses in Litan. The UNC said the root cause of the incidents relates to land ownership issues.

While committing to pursue long-term solutions for peace and justice through engagement, the UNC maintained that it will not compromise on Naga history, culture, land and identity. It appealed to all parties to respect the rights and dignity of the Nagas and to work towards peaceful coexistence.

Describing Lui-Ngai-Ni as more than a festive occasion, the UNC said the festival symbolises the renewal of fraternity within the Naga community and mutual respect with neighbours. The celebration, it added, will be observed with solemnity and prayerful reflection.

On the eve of the festival, the UNC sought goodwill, understanding and participation from all for a meaningful and restorative celebration of Lui-Ngai-Ni 2026.
