UNLF signs peace pact with govt; MHA says first time Manipuri outfit agreed to return to mainstream

Imphal: The oldest armed underground group of Manipur, United National Liberation Front signed a peace agreement with the Centre and State government in the national capital on Wednesday afternoon, ending a six-decade-long armed movement.

Signing of the peace pact between government and the valley based outfit UNLF led by Kh. Pambei is a significant one as, “This was a first time a valley based Manipuri armed group has agreed for a peace accord to return to mainstream by abjuring violence and agreeing to honour the constitution of India and the laws of the land”, said a statement from the Union Home Ministry.

Making the announcement on his X handle, Union Home Minister Amit Shah called it “A historic milestone achieved!!!”

The union Home minister also uploaded photos and videos of cadres of the group.

Chief Minister N Biren also tweeted, “The oldest armed group of Manipur has chosen the path of peace, renouncing violence to join the mainstream and embrace democracy. The United National Liberation Front (UNLF) has signed a peace agreement in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in our relentless pursuit of permanent peace in the Northeast. The unwavering support and vision of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for a brighter and peaceful North-East has made this possible. May this collaborative effort contribute to a harmonious and prosperous future for Manipur and the entire region. The recent development of the United National Liberation Front signing a peace agreement is a testament to the relentless efforts of the BJP Government in bringing peace and development in the North-East states and Manipur. As the UNLF negotiated a settlement and renounced violence, I expressed my appreciation for their decision to engage in “peace talks”. I welcome the UNLF group to the democratic processes and extend my best wishes for their journey on the path of peace and progress”.

Praising Amit Shah, N Biren Singh said the signing the peace agreement with the United National Liberation Front in New Delhi today was made possible under the able leadership of the Union Home Minister.
