Webinar on Northeast political development held

A regional webinar on the theme, ‘Political Developments since Independence in North East India (1947-1972)’ was organized by the History and Political Science Departments of Sankardev College in Shillong on Wednesday.

Addressing the participant, college Principal Dr. Eureka F P Lyngdoh highlighted the importance of being aware about the political and historical developments of the North Eastern states of India and their significance, to understand the contemporary political situation in the region.

Former honorary director of ICCSSR- NERC and Prof (Rtd.) R K Satapathy from the Department of Political Science, NEHU spoke on the topic, ‘Constitutional development in North East India’.

The assistant professor from NEHU’s history department, Dr Binayak Dutta gave a historical overview on the ‘integration of states into the Indian Union with reference to reference to the states of Manipur, Khasi states and Tripura’.

Another former honorary director of ICCSSR- NERC and also retired NEHU professor from the political science department, L S Gassah spoke on the Sixth Schedule: History and Dynamics (Since 1949)’.

Teachers and students from different colleges in the state and region attended the online conference.

The department head E M Tariang delivered the welcome address and also chaired the inaugural session of the webinar. It was moderated by retired history department professor B D Majaw while the department’s assistant professor, Daphibahun Lyngdoh gave the concluding remarks.
