Widespread protest and condemnation pours in from valley over Lucy Marem’s brutal murder

Imphal: Widespread protests and condemnations are pouring in against the brutal murder of a Maring Naga middle-aged woman named Lucy Marem allegedly by Arambai Tenggol at Keibi Heikak Mapal in Imphal East District on July 15.

Various civil bodies including COCOMI, World Meetei Council, Volunteers Coordination Committee Kakching Manipur, Global Manipur Federation, Kabui Union Manipur, Khurai Puthiba & Nandeibam Leikai Ema lup, Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup, Khwai Lalambung Local Nupi Committee and Peace & Development Co-ordinating Committee Khundrakpam A/C have condemned the brutal killing of Lucy Marem and demanded befitting punishment for the culprits involved.

Locals and members of Uripok Nupi Apunba Lup held a rally cum sit-in at Uripok, while Khwai Lalambung Local Nupi Committee staged a protest-meet near MM Gas in Lalambung today condemning the killing of Lucy Marem.

Rajya Sabha MP and titular King of Manipur, Leishemba Sanajaoba also called upon everyone to condemn the brutal killing of Lucy Marem while addressing the gathering of the 4th Annual Ee-gee Khongul Liba (Pukmen Paomenaba), organised by Meitei Pangal Ee-gee Khongul Liba Foundation Committee Manipur at Palace Compound today. Among the political parties, the National People’s Party (NPP) has come out strongly against the cold-blooded murder of Lucy Maring and demanded capital punishment for culprits involved in the case.

Briefing media at the party state office in Naoremthong today, NPP National Vice President Yumnam Joykumar said the people of Manipur should condemn such a brutal and unfortunate incident. He appealed to avoid such incidents which could bring disharmony between the Meiteis and Nagas. Y. Joykumar demanded Chief Minister N. Biren to take serious note of the matter and award befitting punishment to the culprits. He also urged the police to first file charge-sheets against the accused persons at the earliest. Y. Joykumar also demanded public clarification on whether Arambai Tenggol members were involved in the murder case or not, as allegations regarding their involvement had arisen. He urged CSOs and COCOMI to extend solidarity in preventing similar incidents.

Manipur Police has so far arrested 9 individuals, including 5 women, of which one is a Naga woman, in connection with the cold-blooded murder.

The arrested persons are Konsam Naocha Singh (43) of Huidrom Mayai Leikai; Okram Samungou Meitei (38) of Heikakmapal; Ongam Suraj (27) of Keibi Heikak Mapal; Ahanthem Sobita alias Aliyang Newmai (61) of Sawombung Maning Leikai; Thounaojam Chingkheinganba Meetei (25) of Sawombung block; Thounaojam Lata Devi (63) of Sawombung Block; Ayekpam Ashalata Devi (56) and Ahanthem Ito Devi (50) of Sawombung gate; Ngasepam Sunita (42) of Sagolband Tera, presently staying at Keibi Heikakmapal.

Police also recovered one country made 9mm pistol along with two live rounds. The accused persons were produced before Duty Magistrate, Imphal East and they were remanded to police custody for seven days until July 22.
